The specialist, Rodrigo Medellín Legarreta, asked to demystify bats in Cozumel, since these mammals make important contributions to the balance of nature.
Medellín Legarreta gave in this island city the conference called “The Bats, Our Winged Allies” in order to demystify these animals, and that people obtain certain information about their importance for pollination, pest control and seed dispersal .
In this regard, he acknowledged the contribution of the island, to prioritize the conservation and monitoring of bats.
During the presentation the scientist mentioned that there are more than 1,300 species of bats in the world, of which 138 live in Mexico, or more than 10 percent, and there are only five countries in the world with more species.
On the bats in Cozumel, he stressed that about 20 species live on the Island, which makes it an ideal place to conduct research.
He said that for a long time, chiroptera have been exterminated in various parts of the world due to misinformation, linking them to myths, legends, superstitions and even, more recently, with epidemics.
However, he said that it is only and exclusively ignorance, since it is actually an animal that offers great benefits to humanity.
During his stay on the island, in addition to giving the conference, he dedicated himself to monitoring the parking area of the archaeological zone of San Gervasio, where they located some species of bats for registration and follow-up, which will give continuity to a research that will soon be published in a specialized publication.
COZUMEL, MX.— In the next hours, at 9:30 p.m., the Meraviglia cruise ship, from the Italo-Swiss firm MSC, must arrive in the outer band of the Punta Langosta cruise ship, whose arrival generated a stir on this island and the State because, supposedly, a passenger with a coronavirus travels on board.
The arrival of the vessel, with 4,580 passengers and 1,604 crew members, mobilized the State health authorities and the Municipal Health Committee from an early hour.
The secretary of Health, Alejandra Aguirre Crespo, confirmed in a press conference that from an early hour the information on a cruise ship from Jamaica was followed in which a passenger with symptoms of Acute Respiratory Disease travels, “but it is definitely not a case of coronavirus and the operational definition is not fulfilled, so that today we continue without cases in Quintana Roo ”.
At the time of docking the cruise will any test be applied to the passenger? -She was asked.
The study was already done to the patient and does not meet the “operational definition” – he insisted.
As part of its itinerary, the boat arrived in Jamaica, where a study was requested for the passenger, in order to confirm if he is sick with influenza. The test was applied, but no passengers were allowed to descend.
The same happened in Grand Cayman, because the test results were not yet available, so the boat continued its journey to Cozumel. On the way he received confirmation that the patient, who is isolated on the ship, contracted influenza,
MSC said in a statement feeling “disappointed” by the decision to prevent the descent of passengers in Jamaica and Grand Cayman and added that no passenger on the Meraviglia cruise ship has symptoms of coronavirus, an outbreak in China that has left thousands of infected around of the world.
According to the World Health Organization, the protocol to submit a patient to a coronavirus test is that they had been in China in 14 days prior, upper airway symptoms, fever, or had contact with someone who has traveled to that Asian country or with suspicious cases.
However, despite the fact that the Ministry of Health did not object to the arrival of the cruise, the Southeast Consignee Agency requested the Captaincy of the Port and the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo to cancel the berthing of the Meraviglia cruise ship, “on instructions from International Health “
The Department of Epidemiological Surveillance and International Health of the State Secretariat of Health, responded with an authorization for “free talk”, that is, the docking of the vessel.
Consequently, the agency invalidated its notice of cancellation of arrival of the cruise, which will remain docked in Punta Langosta until tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
The municipal president, Pedro Joaquín Delbouis, confirmed that from early on he summoned the Municipal Health Committee, composed of municipal and state health authorities, civil associations, private and public hospitals, councilors of Cozumel and the Armed Forces to give timely follow-up to the case and ensure the health of Cozumeleños and Quintana Roo.
“MSC Meraviglia has communicated that the ship and the administration of the company are in contact with local health authorities so that medical and sanitation protocols are followed on board,” he added.
Currently there are only between 200 and 300 specimens of the Cozumel raccoon. We tell you about this little one about to extinguish because of tourism.
The pygmy raccoon is an endemic species of the island of Cozumel, in the State of Quintana Roo. Its current status is classified as critical, since it is estimated that there are only between 250 and 300 specimens. Also known as Cozumel Raccoon, inhabits a small area of distribution, this being the direct cause of its danger of extinction.
One of its main features is the use of its front legs as hands, having the power to take almost everything with them. They have an omnivorous diet, feeding mainly on crabs, insects and fruits.
Regarding its taxonomy, Cozumel’s raccoon shows gray fur with white stripes, black glasses and golden tail. Their weight ranges between 6.5 and 8.8 pounds, there is dimorphism between the size of the male and that of the female. Unlike other raccoons, Cozumel’s pygmy has a smaller size of body, skull and ears.
As for their behavior, they are introverted and solitary animals, although sometimes they usually form family groups. Their main interaction occurs during the mating season, which goes from January to March. The gestation period lasts from 60 to 75 days, after which a litter of 3 to 5 individuals is born. His life expectancy is 12 years in freedom and up to 20 in captivity. However, raccoons currently live 3 years on average due to the threat of their habitat.
Their activity is usually during the nights, although it is also possible to see them during the day. Raccoons can purr, whistle, growl, scream and even whinny.
The word raccoon comes from the Nahuatl “mapactli”, which means the one with hands. While its scientific name is Procyon pygmaeus, a species belonging to the Procyonidae family.
A Mexican species about to disappear
The island of Cozumel has an area of 478 square kilometers and is located east of the Yucatan Peninsula. Due to current tourism development, the area where raccoons usually inhabit has been reduced.
Another factor that has influenced the reduction of specimens is the introduction of non-ecosystem species by humans, such as domestic cats and dogs.
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) is the government agency whose main purpose is to constitute a State policy of environmental protection, which reverses the trends of ecological deterioration and lays the foundations for sustainable development in Mexico.
COZUMEL, Quintana Roo, September 13.- The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) rejected the environmental impact statement (MIA) entered by the SSA Mexico concessionaire, for the expansion of its terminal on this island, as it failed to comply with the process marked by law.
As it is a procedural problem (they did not publish the project statement in a newspaper within the period set by law) the environmental authority did not go into the matter to assess the viability of this project, so it will be up to the company to re-submit it to consideration.
SSA Mexico intended to build a platform, supported by nine columns, and gangway, with an investment of 56 million pesos, so that they can dock up to three cruise ships larger than the current ones.
During the period in which it was submitted for public consultation, Semarnat received 49 citizen questionnaires with objections to the project, most of which were “members of the municipality of Cozumel”, but also of the Sustainable Development Goal 14 of the United Nations, from the CEMDA association, and from another cruise terminal. The complaints were due to possible damage to the reef due to the works or due to the greater human activity in the area, omissions on long-term impacts, lack of mitigating measures, being inside a protected area, among others. The SSA competition claimed that the new platform would be a risk to navigation.
Additionally, after the deadline, another 73 questionnaires arrived, entered by 38 different people, which were no longer contemplated.
Neither the SSA Mexico document nor the objections were analyzed by Semarnat, as the project was rejected due to a procedural failure.
It should be noted that, in recent weeks, the offices of this terminal were virtually demolished, to be expanded and modernized. These are works outside of what was contemplated in this MIA.
